AP History Students Become Journalists for a Day

Edward Garcia’s AP US History class participated in a different kind of history lesson this week.

Scholars were told to write and create a newspaper set in the 1700s. This project inabled scholars the opportunity to look at different headlines from the Washington administration.

Garcia explained that during a regular lecture, everyone learns the same things because he tells them what to write, but with this hands-on newspaper project scholars have the freedom to customize their learning and can play around with different headlines and writing styles. “I want them to be able to use history rather than just hear it,” said Garcia. He said that students are taught that subjects like math, science and literature are used every day in their lives – he wants his scholars to be able to incorporate history into everyday skills and tasks as well.

Junior Naudia Lane enjoyed this project because it expanded her knowledge on how to do newspaper layouts and different writing styles. “It was fun but it was also really frustrating,” she said. “But it was better than just writing a paper and taking notes.”

Junior Kiara Burgos said she found this project beneficial to her learning because she got to learn about Jay’s treaty and other bits and pieces of that time period. “We were able to put ourselves into the perspective of the people in the 1790s so we could better understand what was happening and what they were going through,” said Burgos.

Some managers prefer lectures so they can get the information out plain and simple but others like to mix it up a bit and give their scholars projects to broaden the different learning styles so everyone can understand the content. “Lectures give scholars specific information, but projects like this lets them study information that interests them,” Garcia said.
