Though the holiday season has passed, the drive to give back to the community continues to flow through the  Academy. This is the second year scholars will head to retirement centers around the city to assist senior citizens with their cell phone questions.

Paul Stephenson, who organized the event said, “It’s an opportunity for scholars at the Academy to help residents that live in retirement centers. A lot of [the residents] have phones, but they aren’t as familiar with everything they can do as like you guys, so you can go help them be smarter with their smartphones.”

Former ASK scholar, Miranda Wachtler, participated in the program two years ago. “I think this program would would benefit scholars on being helpful to others and putting themselves out there to see what a difference they could make in someone else’s life with such a simple task.” She said participating in the event was worth it. “It builds character.”

The idea to bring back the program came to Stepenson after spending time caroling at Fairwinds with scholars before winter break.  How can helping senior citizens benefit ASK scholars? “The benefit of helping others is the experience of freely giving to others and giving back to the community, which is a great thing,” Stephenson said.

The Cellphone Assistance project will take place on Friday, February 3 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at 920 Riverview Dr and the sign-up sheet is outside of Mr. Stephenson’s office upstairs.
