Goodbye From Our Seniors: Do Not Be Afraid to Push Yourself

As seniors begin wrapping up their last few days as ASK Scholars, we asked a few of them to leave some parting words of wisdom for the underclassmen. Below, Cole Feltman talks about having high standards.

Dear Underclassmen,

The halls are now a little less full, being that several faces have permanently left the academy. Being a part of this graduating class has given me some perspective; it has allowed me to reflect on my high school years and has showed me what is important.

First, you should never fear being yourself. Before I moved to New Mexico, I attended a large public school, where — to both the students and staff — I was merely one of two thousand kids. I was untrue to myself, I would never crack jokes or be loud and obnoxious, and this left me not enjoying my high school experience. Then I came to ASK and learned that it was okay to be true to oneself. I found myself enjoying my time here far more than I ever did at my old public school.

I also discovered that I was not challenging myself enough. I used to think that I was not smart enough to take a more advanced course, like pre-calculus or an AP class. This changed when I shifted my attitude toward school. I started by taking Mr. Garcia’s AP US History, and soon realized that maybe these advanced courses weren’t as difficult as they seemed; I finished my senior year having taken three AP courses. Try as hard as you can to push yourself to your own capabilities.

This school has taught me so much about myself, and allowed me to really achieve a full high school experience.
