Tonight, sophomores Trinity Madrid and Gabriela Orr-Dick are holding a Spoken Word Night. ASK scholars will perform their original work in tonight’s performance. Tonight’s event is the final product of their Research in Action project. The goal is to see if people who write and present their  artwork show an improvement in their grades.

In an interview with Orr-Dick, she said, “There was never any time to go to slams or they were canceled and stuff.”

She said she is hoping the SLAM will showcase the liberal arts side of scholars. “This is not only for people at this school who are not really into the science and mathematics part, but also for people who want to share our poetry and not just keep it to ourselves.”

Madrid said, “We are trying to get more people into writing poetry and kind of expressing it because poetry, you know, is fun writing it but it is so much better when you get to go present it and present your ideas to everybody.”

Scholars submitted their work to Orr-Dick and Madrid prior, but they said they may allow some people to present on the spot if time allows for it.

“It would be appreciated if the poems were memorized,” said Orr-Dick. The event will take place in the commons between from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
