The Christmas tree that stands in the lobby right now is there for more than just holiday spirit.

The Giving Tree has been a part of The ASK Academy for three years now.

The tree has paper ornaments dangling from each branch. Scholars and parents are encouraged to take one off and bring back a $25 gift card, the suggested amount. The week right before winter break, gifts will be distributed by Mr. Busse to scholars who might be in need this Christmas season.

“This is our third year doing the giving tree,” said Ms. Mary Lou, who has been an integral part of the Giving Tree program since the beginning. “The first year we did it, 93 scholars received a gift card. Both this year and last year we are giving gifts to 70 people. We wanted to do something for scholars we felt qualified for a gift.”

Scholars are chosen throughout the year based on a certain criteria.

Freshman Jenifer Guzman received one two years ago. “I got a Barnes and Noble gift card for $25. I bought this really cool book I was into at the time, but I don’t remember the name. I felt really good when I got it. I felt like I was important to the school and not just another scholar walking around.”

Freshman Makeila Maguire is one of the students who has donated all three years. “ wanted to help those who aren’t as fortunate so that they could have a better holiday season,” she said.

If you are interested in donating, contact Mary Lou. The deadline to donate is a week from tomorrow, on December 10.
