Cell models made by DeGroot’s scholars

Last Thursday, Mr. DeGroots sixth period Biomedical class got creative in their presentation of cell tissue. The tissues that were presented were Epithelial, Connective, Nervous, and Muscle tissues. The Epithelial tissue is specialized to form the covering or lining of all internal and external body surfaces. Connective tissues connects the muscle to the bones and the skin to the muscle, basically it connects, supports, binds, and separates other tissues or organs. Nervous tissues has two main components, those are the Neurons and Neuroglia, or “glia cells.” Muscle tissue allows the muscles the ability to contract.

To convey their understanding of the tissues cells, the scholars were told to create models — some were made out of Play-Doh, Styrofoam, and actual food that could be eaten, like cake. Other students created games on the tissue cell, such as “Guess the Function of the Cell Parts.”

Scholars who participated in this project said it helped them understand the cell better. Sophomore Cole Jensen said, “I want to become a surgeon; I would need to know how to cut someone up. I did my cell on the Epithelial cell, which means I don’t want to cut the lining on the lungs that protect the organs. It helps me know where it is located.”

Sophomore Gabe Miller said, “It helps us have a better visual understanding of the body instead of just words.”

“It gives us a better understanding of the cells,” said senior Cole Feltman. “It helps if you can touch and see individual parts of the cell, and  it allows us to see it visually and physically.”
