Last weekend, the school’s robotics team,  The ASK Academy Androids competed in a VEX Robotic competition held at White Sands Missile Range. VEX is a system of components much like legos, but largely metal, that are used to build mechanical devices, and in this case, robots. The robots, designed by the team members are then put through various obstacles.

The competition’s point system is based off of several different variables: The ability of the robot handling the obstacles, and the programming behind the robot. During last weekend’s obstacle course, robots had had to stack pegs into towers, place a cube on top of a tower, and push cubes into scoring areas.

In each match, teams form alliances during the finals, and then compete against another alliance so that four teams are on the field at a time. Often times, this can be the most difficult part of the competition. “The biggest thing they had to do was find people willing to join the team and then want to learn how to design and program the robots,” said Ray Nance, a project manager and coach of the Robotics and VEX teams.

The ASK Academy has two VEX teams which consist of a handful of scholars. The first team to compete last weekend was Ryan Cooper, Robert and John Dansro, Brandon Battelle, and Lonnie Hedrick. The second team is comprised of Noah Benavidez, Luke Strebe, Justice Gonzales, and Nate Kiab. Both teams who will be participating in Regionals this weekend.

Scholars are hoping to defend their title as State Champions. Last year, The Androids made it to the world VEX Robotics competition in Anaheim, California.

For those interested in supporting the Androids at Regionals this weekend, the competition will be held at Centennial Engineering Hall at The University of New Mexico. Contact Ray Nance at rnance@theaskacademy.org for more information.
