The funeral for fallen Rio Rancho Police Officer Anthony Haase was held yesterday at Santa Ana Star Center, then a procession snaked through the city to the Vista Verde Memorial Park on Meadowlark Road across the street from ASK Academy. Roads were blocked off for the procession, and patrol car sirens wailed in respect.

ASK Scholars stopped what they were doing and lined up on the edge of the campus to watch the procession, placing their hands over their hearts to honor the officer. CAD Project Manager Andy Hostetler coached Haase in baseball when he was a freshman at Rio Rancho High School. He said out of all the players he taught, Haase was one who could have made it in the professional leagues. “He was the best baseball player,” he said. “He could throw 85 miles in 9th grade, and by his senior year he could throw 94 miles and was our star pitcher.”

Hostetler said Haase never complained of a sore arm, and made throwing the ball with such speed look easy. “I feel really terrible for him. He was only 24 and newly married. He never got the chance to be a parent; it’s sad he didn’t get the chance to have that life experience.”

Officer Haase died Sunday after crashing his patrol car on Idalia. He was on duty and responding to a domestic violence call.
