Opinion: Freshman Takes Kutcher’s Advice, Says ‘You Can’t Download Sexy’

August 27, 2013

Editorial By Haylee Catallo

— Recently, Ashton Kutcher won the “Ultimate Award” at the 2013 Teen Choice Awards and delivered an acceptance speech that surprised us all. His speech wasn’t about the fans, or about how he thought he’d never get here; instead it was about how he got here.

Kutcher had three key points about how he became a successful actor: “Opportunity, being sexy, and living life.”  Opportunity, he says, “looks a lot like hard work,” and to “be smart, be generous, and be thoughtful is being sexy.” Kutcher also said, “Don’t let anybody tell you what to do with your life.”

His speech inspired many, and I took it to heart and decided to expand on his ideas. I want people to see that it is okay to be different, and it is okay to be smart; because in this world everybody thinks life is just about popularity, and who is the prettiest. In reality, it’s not about that at all. It’s about being smart and thoughtful; it is about the way you carry yourself, not about the way you look and who you hang out with. People will like you for you, but if you act like somebody else, it’s no use.  It’s just an act, a show you put on for the public.

At the ASK Academy, the school encourages people to use their inner beauty, and teaches the scholars to be independent and guide themselves through the struggle of life. It also teaches scholars to be creative thinkers and problem solvers.  So, let’s be nerds, let’s be geeks, let’s be beautiful and smart. Let’s be sexy, but most of all, be yourself, because you can’t download sexy – it comes from within.
