Opinion: Early Start for ASK Community Leaves Project Manager Nostalgic for Change in Seasons

August 27, 2013

Editorial By Ed Garcia

— Opening day signifies the change of the seasons —  from winter to spring.  The birds start to come back, barbecue grills are being cleaned, and kids are staying outside a little bit longer.  In the greatest city in the world the Mets and Yankees take the field, with so much promise and hope that this could be their year.

Oh forget it; July 31st was the first day of school.  We lived it, some of us survived it (a two-hour meeting in the morning was a great way to start!), and now, the school year is underway.  Whoever came up with the idea that school should start in the middle of the summer (regardless of what people think, this is not Mr. Barbour’s fault), should really invest money in a calendar.  We are here though, and there is plenty to be done.

For our upperclassmen, welcome back.  Hopefully by September or October you will have computers that work and you can finally complete Bridges.  Seniors, this is the beginning of the end.  Believe it or not, the future is coming.  I am proud to say most of you will graduate.  Graduation has so many special meanings and new beginnings.  It also means that high school is over and you need to get out.  Please get with Ms. Shimada immediately so you have somewhere to go next fall.  The Academy only has so many visitor passes.

Freshman, welcome to one of the best A-rated schools in the city.  You made the right choice.  I have some words of wisdom: With your new found freedom at lunch, make good choices.  McDonald’s every day for lunch is not a good choice.  In January, going to lunch in only your ASK polo is not a good choice.  It is freezing outside!  Finally read the fine print on any field trip you sign up for.  I overheard some of my colleagues planning a 10 mile death march — I mean nature hike.  Just weigh your options. That is all I am saying.

Middle School looks interesting.  Anytime you can spend all day with Mrs. Sewards has got to be fun.

Take to the crowded hallway with optimism, knowing you are working toward something great; your future.  When you leave here, you will change the world and leave your mark where ever you may go.  Your time is now.  Let’s get it.
